What to Consider When Choosing LED Sports Lighting

Classification of Sports Fields & Facilities

Sports fields and facilities can be classified into different levels based on their size, amenities, usage, and level of competition they cater to. The Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) categorizes sport facilities into four different classes:

  • Class I: high-level competition with spectator capacity over 5,000* (such as Division I collegiate sports and professional leagues).
  • Class II: high-level competition with spectator capacity up to 5,000 (such as Division II and Division III collegiate sports).
  • Class III: local and recreational competition with some provision for spectators (such as high schools and some amateur leagues).
  • Class IV: club and recreational competition with limited to no provisions for spectators (such as rec centers, youth clubs, and elementary schools ).

*This does not cover the lighting criteria for televised sports in major stadiums and arenas, which requires special design considerations such as vertical and horizontal illuminance values (these may be defined by individual sports and/or broadcasting organizations).

Illuminance Level

Illuminance refers to the amount of light that falls on a surface and is typically measured in foot-candles (fc). The appropriate illuminance level directly impacts the quality of play, visibility, safety, and overall user experience in a sports facility. Achieving the right illuminance level is critical to providing a safe, enjoyable, and high-quality experience for players.

The IES has foot-candle recommendations for each sports facility classification: Class I (at least 75 fc), Class II (at least 50 fc), Class III (at least 30 fc), and Class IV (at least 20 fc). They also have foot-candle recommendations for a variety of sports and activities:

Soccer 75 50 30 20
Tennis 125 75 50 30
Basketball 30 20

Uniformity

Sports lighting uniformity refers to the consistency of illuminance across the playing field of a given facility. To achieve any desired level of uniformity, you must consider different factors such as the mounting height of lights, their beam angles, and the number and arrangement of fixtures. This ensures that the light distribution is even and balanced, minimizing any areas of excessively high or low light levels.

Vertical Illuminance

This refers to the amount of light that falls on vertical surfaces surrounding the playing area of a sports field or facility. Adequate vertical illuminance ensures that players, officials, and spectators can see and navigate the surroundings comfortably. Especially in televised sporting events, the vertical illuminance helps cameras to capture clear images of players, spectators, and other surrounding aspects of the sports venue beyond the playing area.

Glare Control

Better glare control maximizes visibility, enhances safety, and optimizes performance for athletes while providing a comfortable and enjoyable experience for spectators.

Here is an example for baseball field lighting standards:

Class Horizontal
Target (FC)
Vertical
Target (FC)
Uniformity Max/Min
I
Infield 150 40 2:1
Outfield 100 30 2:5:1
II
Infield 100 30 2:1
Outfield 70 20 2:5:1
III
Infield 50 15 2:5:1
Outfield 30 10 3:1
IV
Infield 30 10 2:5:1
Outfield 20 5 3:1

Lumens & Wattage

Due to the higher efficiency of LEDs, using a lower wattage LED sports light fixture can deliver a brightness level the same as or even higher than the brightness level of a HID/metal halide fixture. Below is a table guideline for choosing LED fixtures to replace HID/metal halides:

HID/Metal Halide
Sports Light Wattage
Equivalent LED
Sports Light Wattage
1000W 300W — 600W
1500W 600W — 900W
2000W 900W — 1200W

It is also possible to use one higher wattage LED Sports light to replace two HID sports lights. This can save you money on the cost of both buying a fixture and installation. However, keep in mind that this may be at the cost uniformity as less fixtures means lower uniformity.

Beam Angle/Optic Distribution

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has established a system of luminaire classification based on the distribution of flux within the beam produced by the luminaire. It is used primarily for sports lighting and flood lighting luminaires.

Beam
Type
Field Angle Range
(degrees)
Projection Distance (D)
1 10 to 18 240 ft and greater
2 > 18 to 29 200 to 240 ft
3 > 29 to 46 175 to 200 ft
4 > 46 to 70 145 to 175 ft
5 > 70 to 100 105 to 145 ft
6 > 100 to 130 80 to 105 ft
7 > 130 and Up Under 80 ft

For example, NEMA 4H4V means this beam type is 4 for the horizontal light distribution, and the beam type is also 4 for the vertical light distribution. For most outdoor sports fields when the fixture mounting height is higher than 50 feet, NEMA 4H4V is the recommended beam distribution. For a higher classification that requires higher light levels, NEMA 3H3V can help to increase the foot-candle on the target area.

EPA & Wind Load

EPA (Effective Projected Area) and wind load are crucial considerations when installing LED sports lights, especially for outdoor sports facilities. By properly considering EPA and wind load during the design and installation of LED sports lights, it can ensure the safety, stability, and long-term performance of the lighting system, providing athletes and spectators with a well-lit and safe environment for sporting events.

The EPA value can be found on each Revolve LED Sports Light Specification Sheet. To calculate the wind load, there are different standards and codes used for various types of structures. For sports lighting fixtures and light poles, the AASHTO standard is more widely used.

Mounting Type

Before installing sports field lighting fixtures, it is important to figure out and confirm what kind of mounting solution is needed for the project at hand. Some common mounting types for LED sports lights include Yoke Mounts and Slipfitter Mounts.
